What is a flood and drain system?

The system works by pumping a nutrient solution from the reservoir into the baskets/trays containing your plants. This floods the baskets and when the pump is turned off (via a timer attached to the pump) the nutrient solution flows into the tank.

While the baskets are filled with nutrient solution, the roots of the plant are immersed and absorb all the nutrients they need. When the pump is turned off and the nutrients are drained, all the stale air is drawn out and fresh oxygen is available for the plant to take up in its root zone.
